Start with your role and hearing

Find the court or tribunal on your hearing notice and contact your solicitor or the office dealing with the case. Say that you need Ukrainian interpreting, give the hearing date and ask who is responsible for booking. Keep the confirmation and check again if the date, venue or format changes. Send the case reference to the official contact, not to a private website enquiry form.

Criminal case: defendant or witness?

According to GOV.UK, a defendant who does not understand English will be given an interpreter; check with the court that it is arranged. A defence witness asks the defence solicitor to find one. For a prosecution witness, the prosecuting agency arranges interpreting. Do not make a duplicate private booking until you understand who is arranging and paying.

Civil and family cases: check the conditions

GOV.UK lists civil possession and committal cases (where breaching a court order can lead to prison), and family cases involving children, domestic violence or forced marriage. For other civil or family cases, the guide sets conditions: inability to pay, no qualification for legal aid, and no friend or relative approved by the judge to interpret. Ask the court how the rules apply to your hearing rather than assuming either free provision or a private payment obligation.

Tribunal: use the appeal route or office

For some tribunals the interpreter request belongs on the appeal form. Otherwise, contact the tribunal office before the hearing. Check the particular tribunal’s instructions, ask for confirmation and report changes promptly. The general guide does not establish identical funding, forms or deadlines across every tribunal.

When a private consultation is separate

The hearing interpreter is normally available during the hearing. Legal discussions before or afterwards depend on the judge’s permission. If your solicitor needs a separate client conference or preparation meeting, ask what is already covered and whether a private interpreter is required. Confirm the payer and any funding route before accepting a quote.

If you need a private quote

Send only the meeting date, expected duration, venue or remote format, general purpose and instructing contact. Larysa Kyshkova holds Ukrainian NRPSI registration 17932, Full status, and is based in Ascot. Availability, conflicts and assignment requirements must be checked; this guide does not appoint her to your hearing. Private bookings have a minimum of two hours and require a written quote. This is practical booking guidance, not legal advice.
